The Show Must Go On: CHS Prepares for a Virtual Broadway Extravaganza

CCSD Staff 2 - 3/29/2021 11:50:00 AM

While performing a musical for a live audience isn’t possible this year, CHS students and staff won’t let that stop them from putting together a Broadway Extravaganza.

Students interested in participating have been asked to prepare an audition video of a Broadway song to submit to Tim Kennard, drama director; Mala Kennard, director of music; and Thomas Watts, orchestra director. They will also submit an audition application and signed confidentiality agreement.

Those who are selected to perform in the extravaganza will receive coaching like they would for a typical musical. They will also wear costumes, and have a backdrop, set and props for their performances. Each student will have a scheduled time to come in after school for their performance to be recorded by Vanessa George and the Cavs Media students.

The high school orchestra will also prepare medleys from three Broadway musicals and will be recorded in the same way. These pieces will be in the beginning, middle and end of the show with individual student performances in between. An emcee will introduce each piece, providing context about the source of the show and the student performing.

The show will be edited into a video that will be presented for virtual viewing. While admission cannot be charged for the show, the department is asking for donations to help cover the production costs. The Broadway Extravaganza will be released around the end of the school year.
