Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS)
CCSD Staff 2 - 10/28/2020 11:50:00 AM
We recognize that not all students learn the same way, which is why we have implemented Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) in each of our buildings. This program uses data to help match academic, social-emotional and behavioral resources for each student’s unique needs. With these processes in place district-wide, staff are now able to provide individualized support systems for students.
There are three tiers in the MTSS program designed to meet the needs of every student:
Tier 1: Universal Instruction
This tier is the high-quality instruction that every student receives. This encompasses best teaching practices and differentiated instruction. When new methods are found to work well in the other tiers, Tier 1 is refined to incorporate these practices. The district’s goal, and the goal of other districts using this program, is to see 80-90% of all students in this tier.
Tier 2: Targeted Group Interventions
Students who may be struggling in the universal instruction model are assigned to this tier to receive evidence-based support. This instruction is implemented in small group settings. The small groups are determined by similar needs for the sake of systematic efficiency. The district expects to see 5-15% of students in Tier 2.
Tier 3: Intensive Individualized Interventions
For students who do not respond well to Targeted Group Interventions, we offer more frequent, intense and individualized interventions. We expect to see 1-5% of students in this tier.
