Thanks to a Community Connecters Grant, managed by our Curriculum Director Alissa Putnam, students from Worthington Elementary met new friends, learned about engineering, and spent quality time engaged in hands-on learning. Principal David Bennett organized the session for twenty-five students.
The high achieving students were referred by teachers to collaborate with fifteen volunteers from various departments at the hospital to work on an engineering activity called "Sweet Moments"! The students learned about base, support, and structures. They viewed several images of famous monuments and structures from around the world, including the Statue of Liberty, the Washington Monument, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Taj Mahal, and Stonehenge; and, then they applied their knowledge by re-creating their own versions of the structures using candy and a variety of other items.
The volunteers commented about how much fun they had with the students and thanked the students and staff for letting them be part of the afternoon.
